Científico titular del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas y vicepresidente de la Asociación Herpetológica Española (AHE).

Experto en comportamiento y conservación de anfibios, empezó su carrera con el estudio de los procesos de selección sexual y comunicación acústica de anfibios, desde hace años se dedica al estudio de las enfermedades emergentes propias de los anfibios.

Responsable del Programa de Seguimiento de Anfibios del parque Natural de Peñalara desde 1999 , donde dirige el Centro de Cría de Anfibios Amenazados de la Sierra de Guadarrama de gestión conjunta con la Comunidad de Madrid.

Investigador responsable de distintos proyectos de investigación en varias zonas del mundo sobre conservación y programas de seguimiento de poblaciones de anfibios.
