Miguel Bastos Araújo has a PhD in Geography from the University College London (2000). He is a Research Professor of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid. Professor Araújo is a biogeographer with a longstanding interest in improving understanding and predictions of global environmental change effects on biodiversity.


He authored over 180 publications in journals and books and was identified as ‘highly cited‘ scientist by Thomson Reuters (2014). The impact of his research on broad scale biodiversity patterns and climate change appeals broadly, with several papers being regularly featured by the International press as well as by scientific magazines.


In recognition of his work, Prof. Araújo has won the Rey Jaime I Prize for  Environment Protection in 2016 and the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2014). He also received the IBS MacArthur & Wilson Award (2013), given to an individual ‘for notable, innovative contributions to biogeography at an early stage in their career’, and the GIBIF Ebbe Nielsen Prize (2013) awarded to researchers that “combine biosystematics and biodiversity informatics in an exciting and novel way”.



Miguel Araújo is Editor-in-Chief of Ecography and member of the editorial boards of Climate Change Responses, Frontiers of Biogeography, “Natureza & Conservação”.
