Investigación

My research in Mineralogy began in 1989 at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC) in Madrid and the Instituto de Ciencias de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), receiving a Ph.D. from the Department of Crystallography and Mineralogy of the Faculty of Geological Sciences (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) in 1992, for a study of local order in feldspars from granitic pegmatite by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In 1993, I obtained a grant from IGME (Geological Survey of Spain) to work in their museum. In 1994 I started a post-doctorate to combine a research on feldspars at the Center de Recherche sur la Synthese et Chimie des Minéraux (CRSCM) in Orléans (today Institute des Sciences de la Terre), CNRS (France), and the Electron Microscopy Center for Materials Science (EMAT), University of Antwerp (Belgium), until 1996. When I returned to Spain, I started to work in the private sector, as head of R&D in industrial minerals, development of ceramic materials (pastes, glazes and pigments) and development of technologies for the ceramic industry, in various ceramic companies, as well as project coordinator in Jaume I University (UJI), Castellón (Spain). In 2005, I accepted a job at the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) in Madrid (Spain) for the investigation and applications of feldspars as retrospective dosimeters of ionizing radiation, using luminescence techniques. In 2009, I obtained a permanent position as Senior Scientist at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), with destination at the Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio (ICV-CSIC). In 2019, I moved to the Departamento de Geología of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales of Madrid. Currently, my scientific interest is related to the explanation of the crystalline order-disorder diversity in the solid state of mineral structures from NMR spectroscopy data. In addition, I am also working on the study of the Evolution of Human Knowledge throughout (pre)history using information on human interpretations of crystals, minerals, gems, rocks, metals and meteorites, in the different cultures of the world, using a multidisciplinary approach.
